I love reading and if you are a voracious reader like me it is a wonderful thing to find good book apps that help you develop better reading habits. I have put together a list of my favorite book apps and hope to add to it when I find more along the way!
The Best Apps for Reading
Libby
I have to start with my favorite app, the Libby app, Check out the whole post I wrote about the Libby App! This is by far the best app to connect to your local library to get your ebooks and audiobooks. All you need is a library card. Although I will talk about the Overdrive app, I feel the Libby app is a better way to go. I also hear that the Overdrive app may be going away soon.
Amazon Kindle
I have a Kindle Paperwhite and it is my favorite Kindle for reading. There are times however that I am out and about with just my phone or my Kindle is charging and I love the Amazon Kindle app. It is a free app that can go on your different devices and is one of the best ebook reader apps out there.
You can download on onto your phone or your Kindle device and read right on them. Don’t forget if you have a membership to Kindle Unlimited you can get a ton of books to read for free. If you are a Prime Member you can also get free books every month. Find out more about that here!
Audible
Do you love audiobooks as much as I do? If you have books you have bought on Audible by having a subscription or where you just bought individual audible books on Amazon the app is a great way to listen to them. You can adjust the speed of the book, keep a wish list, and even earn listening badges (which is just kinda fun).
The app also shows you other books you may like based on the ones you read. If you have a subscription but cancel you still get to keep the books you have bought so the app still comes in handy.
Goodreads
It is hard to believe as long as I have been reading books I never had a Goodreads account. I would check out others’ reviews and ratings but never one of my own. Recently I joined. I love that all of my favorite books are now journaled right online. Mine still has a lot of updating to do but I am enjoying it.
You can enjoy this app to keep track of all the books you read, wish to read, and are currently reading. You can rate them and even do personal challenges (like how many books you want to read this year). You can follow me here!
Hoopla
There are several free reading apps for book lovers and Hoopla is one of them, a digital media service offered by the local public library that allows you to borrow movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comics, and TV shows to enjoy on your computer, tablet, or phone – and even your TV!
Your titles can stream immediately, or you can download them for use later without needing the internet. Once your loan period is over they will just disappear. There are hundreds of thousands of titles to choose from and that makes this a great choice for a library app.
Scribd
If you love audiobooks you can’t have enough apps for them. Scribd is another app for audiobooks. The difference between this and Audible is with Audible you get a monthly subscription and you get credit to buy an audiobook of your choice (once you cancel you keep everything you own) With Scribd you pay a monthly fee (8.99) to hear the books or read ebooks you want but you don’t own them. It’s like Netflix for books! Their library is amazing with thousands of choices, including the best sellers. Scribd has a Free Trial
Basmo
With Basmo you not only track the books you read but you track the emotions you feel as you read. It is a fun way to save your book ideas. How many times are you reading a book and you have all these emotions with a scene or in part of the story? Or maybe you see a quote you love and want to remember or notes on a non-fiction book you want to have. Now you can track it all. You can set reading goals and organize books in collections.
Apple Books
Apple Books is the single destination for all the books you love, and the ones you’re about to. Browse the Book Store, join Oprah’s new Book Club, keep track of what you’ve read and want to read, and listen to enthralling audiobooks. All in one place. Of course, you can read a great book right on the app.
Since I have the Kindle app on my phone I like to use Apple books for documents and ebooks by bloggers. For example, when you subscribe to a list and get a sheet or a book guide (like a summer reading guide) I love to download them in Apple Books so I can look at them on my phone. They are in color too and look beautiful there.
Storygraph
Storygraph is a popular app that helps you find your next read based on your past reading and your mood. For those who don’t like Goodreads or are looking for an additional book tracker, Storygraph may be for you. This app tracks your books and has reviews, reading challenges, and stats in one place. You can export your Goodreads right into Storygraph to have a starting point for recommendations.
Bookly
Bookly is a gorgeous app that helps you track your books, read more, and improve your reading over time. You can scan your books or simply search for them online to add them to the app, from there you can track to whom you lend them, add favorite quotes and thoughts, and see insightful data that can help you improve or read even more. It enhances the reading experience for sure.
Reading can be done in real-time as a daily workout, just start a new reading session and they will take care of the rest.
To keep your focus you can add goals or just simply try to unlock all achievements.
Kobo App
The Kobo Books app lets you read eBooks and listen to audiobooks from the Kobo store, right on your smartphone or tablet.
The Kobo Books app is compatible with:
