As I mentioned in a post about AJ Brown a while back, I’m a huge football fan. I wasn’t always. A few years back I decided I wanted to learn something new. Something that challenged my mind but would be fun and different. I picked the perfect thing; football has a LOT of rules.
When I was young my family loved baseball, and I knew quite a bit about that sport. We live in the Cincinnati area, so the Reds and the Bengals are part of our lives. However, the only thing I knew about football going in was a touchdown. I’m dead serious. I knew nothing, I knew a quarterback was important to the game, but I had zero knowledge of what he did. I asked my husband if he could teach me some rules (he didn’t watch much) but he did play in school and he had quite a bit of knowledge with it. He is now a huge fan, getting into it right with me and that has been nice as a couple (especially as new empty nesters)
I started watching plays on twitter, devouring articles I could find and learning about the rules and the players little by little. This didn’t happen overnight; it took several seasons before I found myself truly knowing about the whole sport and even now there are things I’m learning. There are so many rules and so much to learn. If you would have told me a few years back, I would be on two fantasy football leagues I would have never believed it. But here I am, a total football nerd!
I encourage you to challenge yourself to learn something new, you are never too old. I’m 51 and I love to learn, it is so exciting to challenge yourself and they say it is great for the memory long term. Challenge yourself to say mentally sharp for as long as you can!
In just a couple of weeks the big game will be here! If you love football and are going to have a Super Bowl party or if you are going to one and need to bring something I have a great list of recipes here that would be perfect for your big night. Hopefully we will have a great night of football, funny and heartwarming commercials, and hopefully an outstanding half time show!
