“Remarkably Bright Creatures [is] an ultimately feel-good but deceptively sensitive debut. . . . Memorable and tender.” —Washington Post
A charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope that traces a widow’s unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus
Remarkable Bright Creatures Trailer

Remarkably Bright Creatures (2022) by Shelby Van Pelt is a debut novel about Tova, a 70-year-old widow who works the night shift at an aquarium. There, she forms an unexpected connection with Marcellus, a clever and aging giant Pacific octopus. Through their unusual bond, the story gently explores themes of grief, friendship, and the ways we find connection, with some chapters told from Marcellus’s point of view.
This one is so so beloved by my Facebook community. This comes out May 8th (2 days before Mother’s Day) and is the perfect movie to watch with the special women in your life!
The film features a strong cast led by two-time Oscar winner Sally Field, who takes on the role of Tova, the widowed main character. Lewis Pullman plays Cameron, a newcomer to town, while Alfred Molina brings the character of Marcellus—the grumpy but lovable octopus—to life with his voice. The supporting cast also includes Colm Meaney, Joan Chen, Kathy Baker, Beth Grant, and Sofia Black-D’Elia.
Also in the cast:
- Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Bring Them Down)
- Joan Chen (Dìdi, The Wedding Banquet)
- Kathy Baker (The Ranch, Edward Scissorhands)
- Beth Grant (Little Miss Sunshine, No Country for Old Men)
- Sofia Black-D’Elia (Single Drunk Female, The Night Of)
